Applying a trannsition to multiple clips
Posted by Stevec on February 8, 2006 at 3:47 pmI know this is not Avid and I’m going to get yelled at for comparing it to Avid, but is there a way to lasso multiple clips and apply the same transition to all cut point?
Thanks
Steve

February 8, 2006 at 5:12 pmHave you used the help section (manual) in FCP? The answer is there.

February 8, 2006 at 6:30 pmYes I have used the help manual.
I actually looked in there before coming here.
Maybe I missed it or looked in the wrong section, but I read the entire chapter 21 of Part III of Volume II Editing (Adding Transition) and did not find the answer to my question.Maybe you would be nice enough to tell me at least the page # that the answer is on.
Thanks

February 8, 2006 at 7:18 pm1. Set your default transition to apply to all you cuts
2. Select all the clips to apply the transition
3. Park the CTI (Current Time Indicator) at the beginning of the first clip
4. Drag the selection up to the Canvas and drop on the Overwrite with TransitionThis thread was a bit kinder to converted Avid editors How do you add/delete multiple transitions? by mushyosh

February 8, 2006 at 7:18 pmTom thanks for the useful answer.
I read your suggestion and that will work, but upon looking into this further I found that if you command click on the transition points that you want then you can drag any transition from the effeects menu on to them and it is placed on all the selected points. It’s not as easy as lassoing the group of them and dropping the effect on top, but it works,
Thanks

February 8, 2006 at 7:52 pmThat doesn’t work for me. Command click does nothing in my version of FCP. You can only select one edit point at a time.

February 8, 2006 at 8:09 pmI’m using FCP 5 with a Kensington 2 button mouse ( I don’t think the mouse makes a difference)
If I hold Command (or Apple) and click on the edit point it will allow me to select multiple clips.
Then I can right click (control click) and add a transition or go to Effect/Transitions and choose and one that I want, but I can’t take it from the effects browser like I said before.
Thanks

February 8, 2006 at 8:25 pmCould someone else confirm this please to see if it’s just my systems that are strange. I’m using 5.0.4 BTW. As far as I know you’ve never been able to select more than one edit point at a time.

February 8, 2006 at 8:49 pmI’m using 5.0.4 also.
I found that it will let me do it on multiple track, but not along the same track.
So I can multiple select the edit point on track 1, 2, 4, & 7, but I can’t do 3 different points on the same track lie track 3 or 5.
Thanks

February 9, 2006 at 1:06 amYes, that’s right. You can apply to stacks. Sorry I didn’t realize that’s what you were doing.
