  • Applying a Decal as a Material to an Autocad Object

I’ve converted an .igs autocad (Solidworks) file to an .obj file through Carrara but the textures did not come along with the object, so I’m reconstructing them in C4D. I’ve applied the base material but cannot get the decal to take the irregular shape of one of the sides of the object it’s applied to. Instead the best I’ve been able to do is apply it as a material to a plane and group the plane alongside the gas can object with the illusion that it’s actually on the surface of the can. I don’t see any way to make a rectangular selection on the can for the label since the can is made up of many irregularly shaped “surface nurbs” as Carrara calls them. I’d rather the label didn’t just float above the can but actually be a part of its material. Would Cinema 4D work better with .3ds or .lwo objects, since I can also save from Carrara Pro 6 to those files as well? Any suggestions?

The best solution would be to download the free Riptide plugin which will import .obj files with textures.

I’m using Carrara Pro 6 to convert SolidWorks files to .obj files and then taking the files into Cinema 4D, where I’m trying to apply the label directly to the surface of, in this case, a gas can. I’d just prefer that the label was applied as part of the texture rather than “floating” in the vicinity of the can surface on a plane. Is Riptide a Cinema plug-in or would it also work for Carrara? By the way, the label is not on the original object.
