  • Apply Photoshop Edge/Border Effects To Video

Posted by Steve Crow on March 29, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I came across some filters/actions for Photoshop that apply a variety of edge or border effects to still images such as torn edges or making the image look like a negative with the holes at the edges.

    Here’s just one example:

I am just curious – how could we get the same effect in Final Cut in our videos? Are there plugins for FCP that do this?

I guess I could export a video clip out as a series of still images and then apply the Photoshop filter but that would be a major pain

    Hi Steve!

One option for you is to setup your Photoshop file the same size as your video (Example: 720×480 for DV Video)

1.) add the filter in Photoshop
    2.) Adjust border as desired
3.) Save it as a Tiff image with no layers (Save transparency should be checked)
4.) Import the Tiff image to Final Cut Pro
5.) Move Tiff image to timeline layer above desired video clip.

    Hi Nicholas!

Thanks for responding. What I am trying to achieve is to have moving video with the edge effect overlayed. I understand what you suggested but that would be importing a still image.

    All the best….Steve

    Hi Steve!

In that case you would nest your video and Tiff image in the FCP timeline into one layer. Then animate that nest to move around your screen as desired.

IMHO…Motion and After Effects can also achieve this effect in much higher quality than FCP

Ahh yes I see where you are going here. So as you said before, first create a document in Photoshop at the correct video dimensions.

Next I would organize the Photoshop file so that I have two layers, a transparent background at the bottom layer and then the edge effect filter applied to the top layer.

Finally in Photoshop I would export out the document as a TIF with transprency preserved and then import that TIF into the Final Cut Pro timeline, making sure it is on top.

    Cool!

You might want to consider creating 3-4 different frames and loop them to add motion to your frame edge.
