    Hi gang,

    this is a question about how to apply a material (psd-text file) to an array that was
    made editable. The array now consists out of 36 single pieces, each piece has its
    own material assigned to it.
    What I am trying to do is to put the psd-text file on top of all pieces equally as if you
    project it on top of the whole lot and I am having problems to get it done. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated. As always many thanks for your time.

    Cheers

    Frank

    Remove the tex tags from the individual objects and place one on the parent null, set to planar projection.

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for your reply. Maybe I explained it badly: the textures applied on each object of the (ex) array
    that was made editable I want to keep. If I remove those individual texture tags I’ll lose all coloring that
    has been applied so far.
    I would like to keep all that and in addition add the psd-text file on top. Makes sense…?

    Thanks!

    Ah, I gotcha. In that case what you need to do is:

    * make a version of the text that’s suitable for an alpha (if it isn’t already);

    * put the tex in a material’s alpha channel,

    * drop it on the null containing the array objects and set it to planar projection;

    * use the texture axis tool to rotate/scale the planar projection so it covers the whole array;

    * right click on the tag and select “copy tag to children”;

    * now, unfortunately, you have to drag each tag to the right of the original texture tag … but it will work.

    The problem I have is that when I put the psd-file in the materials alpha (no other channel
    selected) & drop it onto the Null (containing the array – btw: with planar you mean flat???
    Well, tried them all anyway…)
    I can’t even see the texture on the made-editable-array… For the psd-tex I took the first
    layerset-option & ticket generate alpha

    I will have to give it a rest for today, but I am actually tempted to ask you to email you the project.
    Let me know if you’re cool with that. There must be a silly mistake somewhere…

    Thanks again Adam.

    Hi Frank,

    I’d be happy to look at the project if you want to send it to me: adamt at 3danvil dot com.

    Have you looked to see if the underlying textures are showing up in renders, as opposed to the viewport? You won’t see them in the viewport unless you turn on “Stacked Materials” in the viewport’s display menu. The only downside to that option is that it uses a fair amount of memory.
