Hello, I’m making a lower thirds project. There are about 30 compositions with different name layers. Is it possible to add all comps to render queue and automatically apply layer name to render filename?

There’s no built-in way to have the render queue reference the name of layers within a comp. I think your best bet is to name the comps as you wish to render. If you’re using a tool like CompsFromSpreadsheets, you can have it rename your comps based on spreadsheet data, then you can use the render queue naming normally.

you can link the text in a text layer to the comp’s name… the idea here would be to enter the lower third text to the comp name, then the text layer uses the comp name and when you render the file will also have the comp’s name…

The expression that goes in the text layer’s source text property is pretty simple:

    thisComp.name

Then in the project panel, change the comp’s name to ‘Bob Smith’ and the text layer should show ‘Bob Smith’. Add it to the render queue and the default filename should be ‘Bob Smith.mov’.

If you are doing special formatting as you enter the names, this may not work as well. Also some characters can create issues in filenames depending on what systems will be using the L3s….

But is possible to do it in the opposite way? Maybe not to rename the comp but insert a text from the layer into the render file name?

There is no way for the render queue pull layer names into file names.

You could write a script to do this, but with only 30 comps, it would be quicker work to do manually.

Next time you approach a project like this, before you make the comps, you can use one of the methods we’ve outlined above to generate the comp names.
