I know that I should be able to figure this out but it’s been a long week.

    Matte Key on Video 2
    Background on Video 1

How can I apply an effect to the image on the Matte Key without affecrting the background?

You should be able to step into the effect on layer two, no?

Try this link for a way around that:

Also, if you’re using the newest Sapphire plug-ins or BCC effects, they should have a button within the effect editor that says Apply to Title Matte, although I’ve found with BCC effects, they don’t always work well or at all when applied to the title matte.

If you’re wanting to apply the effect to just the fill of the matte key effect–say you want to adjust the color of a graphic only–then step into the effect like Jon suggested, or go into effect mode and Double Click the matte key effect. This will expand it on the timeline. You can now apply a color effect to it and still see your background (if you step in you won’t be able to see the background anymore). This is especially nice when you’re trying to match colors and whatnot. Once you’re done applying and tweaking the effect just double click the matte key effect again to collapse all the tracks. Done!
