  • Apply Blur to Below Layers in Motion 5

Posted by Jordan Smith on June 11, 2013 at 3:40 pm

I’m trying to build a custom transition in Motion 5. What I need to happen is for a circular area to blur as the scene changes. It seems like there should be a way to apply a blur filter to a circle shape or mask so that it blurs the two placeholder layers below it, but I can’t figure out how to do it. Any ideas?

Create a Clone of the entire group that encloses the two transition layers and make sure it’s placed above the first group (it should be by default).

Then apply your blur filter and whatever mask you want to this clone layer and you’ll get the result you are asking for.

Seems hard to find, but I want to make a boxed text template, with a blurry background for use in FCPX.
Is it possible to make a masked gaussian blur on a kind of transparency/adjustment layer, so I can export it (with alpha channel) for using it in FCPX?

(So not masking and blurring an image in Motion with a duplicate like most examples, I don’t want to export any background image with it, just transparency).

    Cheers

It is not clear what you are asking, but if you want to create a FCP X Title template that blurs a section of the background image, then:

    a) make a Clone of the Title Background layer
    b) apply a blur to the Clone layer
    c) mask the Clone layer as required

There is no option to mask an effect in Motion – you can only mask layers/groups.

Yes, that is what I mean. And then only using the blur and text for exporting to FCPX, so I can overlay it there.

    Here is the template:

If you don’t want the text to come through, only the blur of the background, simply disable the text layer in Motion.
