This could become useful depending on the app store offerings. Off the bat uses I can think of:

Interactive time code slate and on-set logging tool.

    Portable camera shader control app.

Pitch presentation platform for animatics and pre-vis.

On-location planning tool: Load up the set in sketch-up and model/ preview the dolly and jib shots before ordering the crews into action.

Interactive real-time continuity app: match and log the shots to the script in real time, track other shots still needed as well as alternates for weather, illness, etc.

    Prompter app is a slam-dunk.

Portable scopes and monitor application would pay for itself.

Production strip-board with interactivity and searchability.

Add camera, = interactive makeup testing app. or digital lightmeter/ chromakey tester app.

3-d matchmover viewport: when you load a CGI setup into it, and connect a dongle corresponding with accurate gps sensor into it, you can walk around the real world set and get a matching view of the cgi set / digital set extensions a la Jim Cameron’s system.

Touch-sensitive plus a connector module means virtual DMX light control board, virtual mixer faders, virtual 4-camera switcher interface, remote PTZ controller. Portable midi keyboard, touch screen theremin, sound effects bank, audio editing tablet, final cut interface, portable green screen effect checker…

Add a Maffer clamp and you got a Close-up 10-hour duration obie and small object light with precise color temp control and animation effects.

3-d display app for stereoscopic cams.

Keeps water rings off your polished wood table.

That came to me in about 90 seconds, I’m sure even cooler apps will be possible. Just wish it had come with a built-in camera, as it seems like it would be a perfect vidconferencing platform, and our own apps and many of those above could use a camera input.

Naw, just an on-location shortcut to the COW, it’s the manual for everything, LOL.

What does the screen look like in broad daylight? Is it as bright as a timecode slate? Most of the applications you mention are just as easily done with a laptop and some better done with a laptop. The ipad doesn’t multitask so switching between a camera and logging software would be tedious. Touch screen typing has never appealed to me.

Special adaptors are needed for basic things like plugging in a USB device. I must say I am underwhelmed.

Ordering one now. Seriously. Looks like it’s a great device to do exactly what it was intended to do. A media entertainment center. I don’t need it to do anything else but just be that.

Ok, can’t order it just yet apparently, but I signed up to be notified when it can be ordered. I’m looking forward to it!

Exactly…I’m already tired of the “It’s not as good as a laptop” and “you can get a laptop for $500” comments. It’s not designed to compete with laptops. They already offer 3 models, what would they need another one for. This is an entirely new product.

I wasn’t that impressed until I started thinking about well is does what it does. I probably not getting one for a while but this thing is going to bring eBooks to life. There is nothing that even comes close for reading a book or newspapers. If I commuted to work I would get one in a heart beat.

But how many of us use our iPhones/iTouch to show our work at a moments notice, Well the quality and WOW factor just went up 100 fold.

While there are typical Apple shortcomings this is doing to be HUGE!
