June 12, 2018 at 5:13 pm[Mathieu Ghekiere] “The whole Metal/Open CL/GL thing is also a bit ‘scary’. Because it heightens Apple’s walled garden and I don’t know yet if that will give Metal a push, or will have the opposite effect on 3rd party developers.”
Well… actually Metal is cross-platform! It just depends on what “platforms” you are talking about… ????
It seems odd to us because we are looking at it from the Desktop platform perspective where the 3 desktop platforms are macOS, Windows, and Linux, but Apple is looking across macOS, iOS, and tvOS platforms because they also just announce the ability to run iOS apps on the Mac. Let’s stop to think about that for a moment… there are MILLIONS of iOS apps and Apple just made it infinitely easier to offer them on macOS using the same Metal API and programming language (Swift). Now it gets more interesting.
Also remember that GPU’s are not only being used for Graphics anymore. They are now being used for Neural Network training because of the massive parallelism that they possess. The next wave of AI based applications probably needed an API that was more adept at these new workloads than OpenCL/GL could offer. That doesn’t mean that OpenCL/GL will stop working. It just means that there is an alternative API that gives greater control over the hardware for workloads that require it.
