Given that we are getting close to the end of 2020, I would imagine that we’ll see Apple silicon machines soon. That should give us some idea as to the horsepower these early machines will have. The iPhone 12 release has tipped Apple’s hat to Dolby Vision. I suppose that means some of these machines may sport Dolby Vision compatibility and probably that the XDR displays will get some sort of a bump or firmware update to support Dolby Vision specs. And along with that the same for FCPX, Motion, and maybe Compressor.

That’s an interesting proposition, since the Dolby Vision spec goes up to 10,000 nits (theoretical), but no common display gets anywhere close. iMacs and iMc Pros top out at 500 nits and the XDR at 1600. So a Dolby Vision spec would be supported, but actual grading won’t achieve the highest levels without some sort of tone-mapping. IOW, will it actually be accepted as “true” Dolby Vision? Or does 1,000 nits or less become the real HDR limit most people will settle for.

The other side of the coin is what sort of minimum OS version and hardware spec will the next application updates require? Older machines (like pre-2013 Mac Pro towers), which can run on Mojave, are already not compatible with some applications that need the most current Metal specs. Will Big Sur or at most Catalina, be the minimum going forward if you want to stay current with not only Apple’s pro apps, but also others, like Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro, Resolve, etc?

I think FCPX &Motion will finally get a major boost this year. Resolve has been updating its software at an amazing pace with great features, but I think this is the chance for Apple to take the lead. Everyone says they want an iPad version and that’s fine, but it won’t make a difference. FCPX needs new innovation. What is that? You only have to look at MotionVFX to see what the issues are. Motion VFX has driven the innovation for Apple these past few years. Motion VFX did 3d text and shapes before Apple. Then Apple introduced 3d text into FCPX/Motion. Now its the 3d tracker. And this the point, FCPX is missing ITS OWN advanced 3d tracker baked into the product. Resolve has it with Mocha. Why has Apple done nothing? The particle engine in Motion has not changed in over 10 years. It cannot compete against what Resolve can do with Particles. If Apple wants Apple TV and all studios to use their Pro products then these 2 basic elements need to be built into and updated in FCPX. Even merge Motion into FCPX similar to Fusion and Resolve. With Apple and its new ARM strategy for Mac and the benefits of using the neural engine that brings, this is the moment for Apple. They will miss the boat if 10.5 is not revolutionary.

Id rather see them update the actual editorial functions than the fx like a 3d tracker. Cant really compare FCP to Resolve IMO as far what the feature set priorities are.
