  • Apple Uncompressed no Alpha?

I am working with the Apple Uncompressed 8 bit codec and was wondering why you can’t render out of say, after effects, with RGB + Alpha. Its rediculuous that you have to render two passes of everything to get an alpha. Am I missing something? Is there any way to fix this?

There are only two codecs I know of that support alpha.
Animation is one of them. Apple is not.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The Sheer Video Codec and the Microcosm Codecs offer Uncompressed with Alpha, but they are not free. If you are having problems using the Animation Codec, they might be worth a look. Neither will play without render within FCP.

Do not attempt to use the Avid Quicktime Codecs, which also support alpha, within FCP…they don’t work well…instability, crashing, etc. It has not been updated in many years.

There are no codecs that support alpha that work with realtime editing. This includes Avid…remember, Avid does not edit with Quicktime, but rather converts Quicktime to OMF (splitting off the alpha) on import.

If you work in After Effects, you can add an output module that renders only the alpha. Then use that as a luma matte in FCP

Thanks, yeah I realize I can render a seperate alpha, but that really is an unneccesary step. I wish you could just do an embedded alpha with the uncompressed or some sort of plugin for it.
