  • Apple uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit Rendered for Use in Final Cut on a Windows machine?

Posted by Josh Weiss on October 20, 2005 at 3:40 am

I have heard that the Apple uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit codecs are the new standard for use with Blackmagic cards as they are universal and not restricted to use with a Black Magic card. However, my company uses both windows and mac and our 3D department where the bulk of our renders are coming from is on PCs. Does anyone know if there is a way to install the Apple uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit codecs on a windows machine?

    Hi,

Good news! You don’t need to worry about the different codecs as they are both written to the same standards and are compatible with each other. Clips captured or rendered in one codec can be opened by the other. I doubt the Apple uncompressed codecs would be released for Windows.

For 8-bit uncompressed clips, the Apple and Blackmagic codecs are written to the same 2vuy standard.

For 10-bit uncompressed clips, the Apple and Blackmagic codecs are written to the same v210 standard.

So you can move clips between Mac and Windows systems and will be able to work with the same files on both platforms.

Luke, thanks for all of the help. Does this mean that if I take the clips to a system with another card, such as a Kona card or any other brand that they will play down correctly if they are designed to be compatible with the Apple uncompressed codecs.

Luke, Just to clarify I meant taking the Black Magic codec clips and not the apple clips. The yes was in reference to the Black Magic codec correct?

    Hi,

Yes to both 🙂 You can open Apple clips with the Blackmagic codecs and Blackmagic codecs with the Apple clips. It does not matter whether you are using an DeckLink or other system and it does not matter whether you are running Mac OS X or Windows.

On this subject, can I request a new feature? The ability to create Blackmagic AVI files on a Mac. That would be helpful.

    Hi Sean,

Thanks for the suggestion which I will pass on. I think there have been various AVI issues on Mac in the past including file size limitations so we’ll need to check for the latest information.

Can you tell me what workflow you have in mind where AVI support on Mac would be useful?
