I am trying to make AppleTV- compatible clips using the presets in Compressor. According to Apple’s specs, the two compatible HD formats are 1280×720 @ 24 fps or 960×540 @ 29.97 fps. I can get the 960×540 to work, but the results are less than stellar. When I try to load the 1280×720 file onto the Apple TV, I get a message that the file is incompatible. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
The original file is XDCAM HQ 720p60.

I used the preset, but I changed the default of 960×540 to 1280×720

Try using the preset without touching anything.

If you want, download this preset that I made. It works for me:

Put it in your User Folder > LIbrary > Application Support > Compressor folder.

Make sure you quit Compressor before adding anything to that folder.

    If I don’t change anything, I get 960×540. That’s not HD.

    Jeremy,

I’m encoding right now using your preset. Technically, it should not work, because the spec says that for 1280×720, the frame rate needs to be 24 fps, and yours is 59.94. I tried that already, and it didn’t work for me. I’ll let you know how it works out. Thanks for your help.

    GIve it a shot.

I forgot, most of the stuff we do is 23.98. I think the frame rate is set to ‘current’.

Your preset must be radically different from the Apple preset, because it’s taking forever to encode a 5 min. piece.

YOu can also set an in and an out in compressor for 10 seconds or so to see if it even works.

    I simply use visualhub.

    Works like a charm.

I rarely use compressor for AppleTV encoding…..
