    Been using Vegas since ver 1, and have good Boxx system, with ciniform, BUT don’t feel I’m really squeezing the best out of my 7D. Two questions about apple land…

    Can any native, imac work well with fcp, (I see refurbished stuff for OK$ dual core 3.0 or so) or do I have to cough up the bucks for mac pro, to have a reasonable real time edit flow?

    Do any apple systems allow you to skip the transcoding and work directly with the .mov output? Love the 7D, hate the transcoding..

    Hi Craig-

    I wouldn’t say any iMac- it should be a recent (i.e. with a year old or less) model for best performance and definitely an Intel. But other than that- sure FCP will work and a big Mac Pro is by no means required. You can drag and drop 7D files directly into a timeline in FCP and edit- however for best quality and performance I’d recommend a quick transcode to ProRes first.

    You can easily set this up as a Compressor droplet/watch folder. I.e. you dump footage into a specific folder on your Mac and it automatically begins the transcode to prep files. And a direct plugin for FCP’s ingest tool Log and Transfer is in the works from Canon. So what I’m saying is- yes please come in the water’s great.

    Thanks Noah…that’s what I needed to hear. If you don’t transcode, is there any quality difference on render, or just OS smoothness while editing?

    Little of both- but this would be the same on any system pretty much. H.264 is a bit of a kludge as an acquisition format, much worse as an editorial format. But it’s what the camera makes like so there you go. Depending on your system of course- but in general the conversion goes so quickly and can be so automated you’ll never really be slowed down by it, and you’ll get mucho better performance/quality long term as a result.

    Thanks…I like neoscene…but after a lifetime of dumping avi files, I still resist the extra work…appreciate the advice.
