Anyone with experience setting the performance settings on the Apple RAID admin? I am working in DVCPROHD codecs (1080i and 720p) and am unsure of the “read pre-fetch” perfered setting. Apple recommends 128 stripes for uncompressed SD and HDTV , while at that setting, reads off the array at less than 40 kb/sec. The 8 stripe setting gives results of 80 Kb/sec. Either setting produces a write speed in excess of 100 kb/sec. Any suggestions? I’m using 7-500 gb drives on just one controller at RAID 5 right now.

You want to turn off “Allow Host Cache Flushing” and “Use Steady Streaming Mode” in RAID Admin. Turn on the other two options. I use 8 stripes and it gives me good speed. With only 7 drives and running RAID 5 you’re not going to get great speeds with an Xserve RAID (turn off journalling if you do stripe two halves together in Disk Utility and use 64k or 128k, instead of the default 32k). They need to be fully loaded with 14 drives and striped together as RAID 50 for optimum performance.
