  • Apple ProRes 422 – can you export in high quality?

Posted by Sean Duncan on January 26, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I have been using Voltaic HD to convert raw MTS files to edit using Final Cut 6 which takes an extremely long (and frustrating) length of time. What I want to know is it possible to edit using the ProRes codec and convert to high quality on the final export? I am a bit clueless about this and would appreciate some ideas – I use a Panasonic SDC-HD9. Thanks to anyone in advance who can help.

    Hi Sean,
    i’ve never used Voltaic.
    Hw it works?
You just convert your MTS in a QT movie?
    Had you tried MPEGStreamclip?
Converting from a a MTS to QT, the best option would be 8b Uncompress.
But this would gives you really big files. you can try Proress too.

Voltaic is good – converts mts to quicktime with minimal to no loss in quality (I’m not an expert on such matters – maybe someone would care to elaborate). The problem is that it takes an absolute age to convert.

On my latest project – a music video for a band – it took over three days to convert all the files, and being raw Quicktime files took many gigabytes to store – I was hoping there was a workaround which would allow me to edit in ProRes / another Final Cut format (while using the mts files are reference) and upscale (again using the raw mts files) and output the final product in the highest resolution seeing as the mts exist in the higher quality.

I should also point out I am using Final Cut 6.0.4 at the moment.

I think that with Voltaic you have no much control on a any process.
I suggest you again have a look to MPEGStreamclip. Even if you don’t use it for this task, you should have it. You can download for free.
