  • Apple Pro Res Universally Compatible?

Posted by Phil Bates on August 18, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I asked this question in another forum, but wanted to cover all my bases: Just wondering if Apple Pro Res(including HQ and 444) is considered a universal format, compatible with most editing and compositing applications? Do you know of any problems or issues with this codec?

    Thanks,
    Phil

Of course it’s not universally compatible ! It’s an Apple product. There is no codec that is univerally compatible. There is no “easy”, so you don’t have to think about it. This applies to AVID DNxHD, MPEG2, MPEG4 (h.264), and everything else. There is not one single codec (not even .psd) that can be read by everything on the market.

Hmm… maybe I was too all-inclusive. Up ’til now, as a stock footage company, we have provided Quicktime flies compressed with PhotoJPEG. It has been accepted by virtually all our customers without problem. Unfortunately, we are having quality issues the latest version of CS5’s PhotoJPEG output. We need an alternative. Other than Apple Pro Res, I don’t have any other options that come close to quality, file size and convenience.

    Thanks,
    Phil

Thanks Dave, we are in discussion with Adobe now and one of their engineers has our files. We’ll see how it goes.

If you need a compressed 10bit codec that can be read, and therefore transcoded to other formats, ProRes is a good choice. Apple offers a free PC and Mac ProRes decoder. There’s good reason why EVS and Arri chose it.

The below codecs do not allow encoding… for that you do need a Mac and FCP. Really just Qmaster… no serial required.. a little known fact.

    Hi Phil,

Any progress on your Motion-JPEG banding issue? That one really puzzled me, and I’d love to hear how it gets resolved.

    Hi Walter,
Nothing yet from Adobe. I will post post their response here though.
