Apple, Oranges? After Effects VS Maxon Cinema 4d

The short answer is: it depends on what you want to do. We don’t know what you need, so we can’t tell you if AE or C4D is a better choice. There is some overlap between the two apps, but not that much in my opinion.

Get AE, then get C4D when you get annoyed with AE’s 3D limitations. 🙂

After Effects is most widely used for:

– motion graphics
– compositing
– visual effects work
– color correction
– video editing/manipulation
– time manipulation (slow-downs and speed-ups)
– Basic cartoons/animation
– Titles

C4d is most commonly used for:

– 3D animation
– Some motion graphic elements

Based on this rough and dirty list, there is no comparison between the two in terms of capabilities. C4d is a great 3D app, but it won’t ever be a good replacement for After Effects any more than AE, which has very limited 3D tools, will be a good replacement for C4d.

If any comparisons were to be made, it would more likely be comparing a program like Fusion or Combustion to After Effects.

These are 2 programs are great partners, not competitors – AS partners, you would use one to create 3D elements and the other to composite and and effect with – In fact, Adobe and Maxon are having a tour this summer showing how well they work together. It’s called “the power of integration tour.”

You might want to look at the Max to AE tutorial by Alan Shisko: https://shisko.blogspot.com/
While it is not c4d it gives you a great idea of how a 3d program and AE work together.
