Apple NAB News?

Though, I did not go to Vegas this year, I do know there were no announcements about FCS, and to be honest with you, none were expected. Apple did release (as predicted) the next generation of MacBook Pro’s on Tuesday, but that was not an NAB event. (However the exact release date was probably timed for NAB) Apple does not “Do” NAB now, they do not have exhibit there and indeed it seems they don’t believe in doing any trade shows, preferring instead to stage their own events to make product announcements. It would stand to reason that sometime in the not so distance future there will be a new release of FCS, with all the programs totally re-written to take advantage of 64 bit structure of Snow Leopard. But don’t hold your breath, predicting Apple’s product announcements is like gambling in Vegas, a risky proposition at best!

But that’s it. They announced FCP 7 last July. Updates are generally two years apart. Next year.

It sounded like, “Our product is so great that we don’t even need to work on it anymore. We sucker our 300 partners to do it for us!”

I was comforted to at least see Sr. Product Manager Steve Bayes talking about FCP though. I guess he wasn’t one of the 40 FCP employees that were rumored to have been cut from Apple.

In all reality, this NAB did more to firm up Apple’s stake in FCP than prior years. Apple is now licensing ProRes to other developers. The ARRI Alexa camera records to ProRes. Clipster DVS on Windows can now encode ProRes. AVID, Premiere, Vegas and other can now all edit ProRes. This either means that Apple is unloading anything that they feel like they can make money on (ProRes) or they think that the world can revolve around FCP/Apple. From Steve Jobs reputation, I’d bet on the second.

I still hope that FCP is in for a 64-bit rewrite coming up soon. We’ll see. And for all of the people that showed up at the Renaissance hotel for Apple’s announcement, they moved the announcement unexpectedly to the Hilton tomorrow at noon.

Well, that makes total sense for Apple to make this move. The COW is a much better platform for support than Apple’s support team.

Clipster DVS on Windows can now encode ProRes. AVID, Premiere, Vegas and other can now all edit ProRes

Premiere Pro has been able to edit it, but does not encode it. As long as Quicktime is on the system and contains the ProRes codecs it shouldn’t be a problem. Adobe hasn’t licensed ProRes though, so you would need to have FCP on the same system I think for that to happen.
