First benchmarks are saying the Macbook Air has the CPU power of the 16″ MBP. In a computer without a fan. Even though the Macbook Air will probably not sustain that performance very long, and the graphical power is bigger in the 16″, that is a very impressive feet of engineering.

But what applications will be ready tomorrow (today?) when Big Sur is released? Intel has several if not five plus years of viability left on the Mac platform. Apple has said the transition to Apple Silicon will be at least a few years. Buying a more fully specced Intel Mac is still not a bad idea if you need more connectivity. If you don’t, a $1300 laptop, or $1000 Mac mini may get over the hump for the next year or two. If I had to buy today, I’d still go Intel. I need more than two thunderbolt ports, and I need more than 2TBs of internal storage. i literally just finished an 8k red project in full resolution on my 16” MBP working from home. They are still very powerful and highly capable little machines.

It’s really not that tricky. Also, with Thunderbolt 4 coming, you’ll be able to have thunderbolt hubs, which will open up more connection possibilities on fewer ports. I’d wait on Apple Silicon unless planning to refresh within two years. In that time something else will be available that will have better specs and perhaps more options that will last a pro a little longer.

Truly remarkable. Can’t wait to see real world tests on these and what the longer term usability looks like.

I’ve been through this with Motorola and PowerPC then Intel.

I opt to wait for a few gens before jumping in.

Plus without a 16″, not sure I would ever go lower for mobile use.

That’s easy. You buy the $6k Apple Pro Display and strap it to your backpack. 🙂

My friend is weighing up many options but for the time being has postponed any purchase. Her existing laptop needs a bit of management to get some performance and weirdness issues sorted. A killer argument for her is battery. Being a location stills photographer, having a days worth of battery power when on location matters. The M1 laptops are talking 18 hours. Over time that will drop but being able to run for a full days shooting without access to power is great.
