Apple Iphone 13 footage
Posted by Dan Crouch on March 19, 2024 at 12:43 amHello.
I have some Iphone footage shot in an Iphone 13 Pro.
The codec it was shot on is AAC, Timed Metadata, HEVC.
I am having trouble ingesting into Media Composer 2023.12.0 on my MAC Dustbin, 12.6 Monterey.
The footage looks perfect on the drive, but everything I try ends up wuth the footage looking washed out and incorrect.
I have tried converting to various formats, Pro Res, DNxHD and XDCAM but nothing is working. Even if I take it into Resolve, the picture is already washed out so I can’t apply anythng like Rec 7 as the image is incorrect when I start.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Dan.

I don’t know if this will help you, but there is a discussion going on over on the Premiere Pro forum that you might want to look at:

It does go towards solving part of the problem.
When adjusted in Resolve, the colour is improved a bit, but it still looks incorrect, like the gamma is skewed somehow. It feels like my Mac may need a plug in or something to make sense of the IPhone footage. Also the exported clips from Resolve are absolutely huge, 500gig + as opposed to a couiple of gigs when they went in.
Many thanks,
Dan

Yes, there is some people that suggests going through Davinci.
Although it might fix the immediate problem, IMHO it creates a new one where you break the link between the original source footage, in relation to the final master. As in a undefined future it might become impossible to link back to the original.
+ 500Gb is just way over the top too much.I found this video which might help you – I’ve not watched it the whole way through, but looks like it covers the bases.

March 23, 2024 at 1:42 pmThanks again Mads for the reply and the link to a tutorial. I followed the info and although it’s close to solving the problem, it falls short of correcting the colour issue and still requires some quite tricky colour correction after ingest. And as it’s iPhone footage it doesn’t have the colour range to cope. I’m going to work with the resolve clips and keep looking for alternative work arounds.
Thanks again,
Dan

March 24, 2024 at 12:21 amHey Dan,
Sorry, I never asked if you are matching the footage to other cameras?
Having thought about it, back in the day Avid Symphony was the on-line tool to use on Avid for Grading – have you got it, and have you tried it?
If you are matching the iPhone to a specific high-end film camera chip, you should consider getting Cinematch – I’ve purchased it, but need to install it. It will work with Davinci, and if you look at the list of supported “cameras”, iPhone is on it + it comes with a free trial:
https://www.cinematch.com/BorisFX Continuum has got a ton of filters, that also works on Avid MC. You can get a free trial and/or rent for a month:

No I do not have other footage I am cutting with, this is a personal project that I am cutting at home.
I have managed to sort of make it look ok, but it’s definately not as good as solving the incompatible codec issue.
Thanks again for the follow up.
Dan.
