  • Apple Intel Processor Switch – What Does It Mean For Blackmagic Design?

Posted by Nic Adlerton on June 8, 2005 at 12:20 pm

Apple’s recent announcement that they will be switching to Intel processors mid-2006 has sent a flurry of delight and/or dismay through the hoardes of developers and users of the machines, and throws up questions about legacy support for older G4 and G5 based systems and 3rd party hardware used therein.

What will this announcement portend for Blackmagic Design? Will legacy cards still work? Any difficulties? Or possibly benefits? XCode with the SDK’s allows dual compilation of source code already for PPC and Intel chips – is this going to change anything?

Different drivers for both hardware, but sure you wil have same feature (i hope).
Apple has realase compiler for mac osX on X86. In most case just a recompilation is suffisent..

But i think power-pc platform has some extra time: you will need a final cut x86, a high end workstation (it won’t be the first hardware realase of Apple, whoes plans high end computer on x86 for 2007).

So! you have some time before you could use your decklink on a MAC X86 platform! and i think blackmagic guys will be ready then
to provide you a full functionnal driver for your favorite computer.

    regards

Why don’t you stuff a cell chip or two into your new Multibridge so we can still enjoy some Altivec fun after the switch?
