I want the output from my FCP timeline to be output via Firewire to a real-time encoder (Digital Rapids StreamZXS, basically a PC) Firewire input. In other words, I want to do real-time encoding via Firewire from the timeline. The StreamZXS does not recognize the DV input from the G5 via Firewire. I know I could do it by going through another DV device and using that device’s other outputs. I had this same problem trying to input directly into a Mediasite recorder via Firewire. Somehow, a PC doesn’t recognize input via an Apple’s Firewire port.

That’s because you’re essentially doing a computer to computer transfer, which requires a Network to allow the two computers to talk to each other. You cannot do that via firewire. What you need to do is feed your video out of the G5 as video and then feed that to the PC.

I am very interested in this topic because I too have had the same problem. I need to output my Final Cut Pro to a PC and I used to be able to do it with FCP version 3. When I made the move to V4 I could no longer do it, and I stil can’t do it with V5. When the responder says to output in “video” do you mean output via S-video or composite? Or is there some way to change the output and still play it out via firewire. Like I said… I used to be able to do this so this is very frustrating (and time consuming). Now I have to play my FCP project out to a camera via Firewire, then play the camera into my PC via Firewire. It just doesn’t make sense to me why my PC can’t “see” the FCP output directly. If it’s a codec issue, is there a codec I can download?

    Thanks
