[Herb Sevush] “it’s been used in animation for at least 80 years, but now that it’s in an e-reader it’s somehow different?”

I think it is – in the case of this patent. It’s specific to a page turn in a graphical user interface. That’s different than a page turn as the end product. They also refer in the article to specific algorithms developed by Apple to give it a unique appearance. I don’t think Apple will come to sue you if you used a Kscope w/Kurl board in the 90s or Quantel Mirage in the 80s. 😉

    It’s not a real patent – it’s a design patent.
More like a logo or a shoe with three stripes.
Make it two stripes and you’re good.
It’s very limited and just there to prevent imitation.

    Joseph –

My apologies, I completely missed the sarcasm. I must have been wound a little too tight yesterday. Very funny indeed.

I think Apple are on to something here, given the number of newbie filmmakers coming into the business, plus all the clients who think they can make films without hiring a pro.

With that in mind, I’ve just patented both star and box wipes, plus picture-in-picture, bleach by-pass, fake flares, unnecessary slider shots, bad use of shallow depth of field and a bunch of other “my mom bought me a camera” techniques.

**gasp** …. he’s shallow DOF hater!!

(I wonder if he’d feel the same way if it was called perfunctory DOF?)

No. Not a hater of shallow DOF. I use it all the time. It’s when people use it when deep DOF would be more appropriate. It’s lazy thinking, poor craftsmanship and shows a lack of skill.

Good word perfunctory – I think I might try and use that today…
