[Chris Harlan] “Its just funny to me, and probably no one else. I’ve had a long-time fascination with Roman history, so the current agreed usage of “decimate” as “utterly destroy” instead of “reduce by a tenth” always sticks out. And, rather boorishly, I always seem to want to remark about it.”

In my effects-drive corner of the world, decimate means remove extraneous (usually duplicate) frames from a sequence at a regular interval — far closer to the Roman meaning than the modern one. People look at you funny when you suggest decimating footage. Maybe that’s because no one shoots on anything measured in feet anymore…

I had no idea! That’s so cool.

[Walter Soyka] “But regardless, what does the author’s opinion on FCPX have to do with his report, supposedly from former employees, that there are only two developers left on the team, with no plans to rehire? That’s either factually true or not.”

Gerhard Lengeling and Chris Adams wrote Logic (notator back then) Prior came up with the x-key and is the brain that keeps the software going. How many programmers does one need to write a great app…? You can outsource code… AVID does with protools. And they are NOT alone.

Perhaps the author got the inside from former employees perhaps he did not… Still, someone calling himself a protools expert should abide by facts and NOT yada yada… And until he’s got proof which he is willing to share the article is non-sense that should be regarded as such…

Those in the know, are either under NDAs and WONT talk or facing legal issues if mumbling. So that article IMO is not worth the webspace 😉

It’s true, it’s also a fairly common expression in 3D modeling. Sometimes, you have to decimate polygons and vertices from high-poly models (usually a hero) so you can make low-poly copies for game engines or crowd scenes (using particle/replication systems). 🙂

There’s also the sense of decimating audio – which is bit depth (or sample rate) reduction.

Whether or not Propellerhead executes potential mutineers might not affect users that much, but obviously the Swedes have different methods of reporting their company’s stats. It seems to be a stable company vis-a-vis Avid and the Logic department of Apple.

Anyway, Reason 6.5’s time-stretch algorithm is killer for video, but I knew back in the Record days that Propellerhead’s time-stretch was tops, and I’ve compared this to Pro Tools and Logic. No need to search for perfect fitting music when Reason can stretch it to a certain extent and still sound good.

If Reason ever takes on video that would be stellar, but probably won’t happen.

I will have to try that! Thanks.

The extraordinarily well-connected (and Canadian) Jim Dalrymple gives his ever-brief take on this:

    Nope.

There’s no truth to this rumor.
