Most folks I know use Apple apps because they are NOT subscriptions or forced bundles. Subscriptions to software is the biggest legal scam in history, period. Apple is now the opposite of what Steve Jobs built. I’ll be moving to Resolve full-time now.

Isn’t this just a way to get a bunch of Apps on subscription? Seems like you can still pay for what you want and not tied to a subscription. Website says this:

“Can I still use my existing versions of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, MainStage, Motion, and Compressor?

Yes. If you already own Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, MainStage, Motion, or Compressor, you can continue using them. These standalone Mac apps are also available for one-time purchase and redownload from the App Store, so you can keep working with the tools you have.”

Well, yes, an era is definitely over. At least it gives the option to share with 5 family members.

    At least it’s some consolation.

Given the AI features will only be available in the subscription versions, it makes the purchased apps a dead end in that regard. Features you get in Resolve for a one time purchase will require a subscription for Apple. Even the “Free” apps will have exclusive features/templates only available by subscription. Yes, truly a sad day. 😥😠

I see. Then yes, that is a bit different.

Just watched a video that said the standalone and studio apps will be the same. Difference will be you will get the iPad versions of the appropriate apps in the subscription. You can still buy all of that apps (for ~$1000) or get them all for $129/year. I guess we will get more clarity as it is physically launched.

I own them all except MainStage. The next step might be a subscription for updates. I wouldn’t be surprised if Blackmagic follows Apple’s lead.

    OK, so here’s clarification:

You can go subscription OR stand-alone, you have a CHOICE.

Subscription gets you all the apps, PLUSE “premium content”.

Without subscription, you have limited access to “premium content” but have access to all “functions/features”.

Curious that the Photos app wasn’t included.

And based on the history of other “subscription” apps, the subscription model doesn’t ensure any change in quantity or quality of future updates.

Note that neither Photos nor Photomator is mentioned. Perhaps they’re being combined and under construction (not ready on January 28th).

Sounds like a win for new users.

I think my ROI (2011) of FCPX is still good 🙂

Or as one of my email chains remarked, which I think is where it’s headed eventually…………

“Apple is splitting FCP into two tiers – free entry level, paid upper level, similar to Resolve. Just as with Resolve, Apple is putting all AI features into this paid tier. This seems to be driven by their need to increase services revenue.”

I mean training from 2018 on how to use FCP is still 95% accurate. I think Apple may have finally decided after all this time that “significant” updates rather than incidental updates have to be paid for period.
