Apple Compressor is moving clips on my timeline
At first I thought it was DVDSP. Then, I discovered it was actually Apple Compressor doing the moving. In trying to use DVDSP, I exported my sequence to Compressor to be used in DVDSP. In creating the DVD, sections of my video were out of synch with the music and the rest of the video. It’s really weird. Clips are off by as much as 2 seconds. Most everything is right on and where it should be, but a few critical clips are out of synch and I don’t know why. It’s a 6 minute music video. I learned how to use DVDSP and I have Aharon’s tutorial on compression techniques. I used both a preset in Apple Compressor for DVD and a custom setting for the web and while the quality of the video is great, both versions are out of synch. This happened a couple of weeks ago. My fix was to create a duplicate sequence and move these items out of synch on my timeline in FCP according to how they were output to video. In order to see the final product, you have to export it because the preview in FCP is completey out of whack. “Damnit, Jim!”

What kind if media and settings are you using in
FCP? Are you exporting a self contained QT and compressing that in compressor? If so, how does it look by itself? -
MiniDV captured at 29.97 720×480 NTSC. Data Rate 3.6 MB/sec. I export the sequence directly out of FCP and into Compressor.

Try exporting the show as a ref or self-contained QT movie. Then bring that into Compressor. However, if your audio & video are out of sync in FCP, you need to fix that. Have you trashed prefs & repaired permissions?

So does that mean compress it twice? Once as a quicktime movie and then into compressor? Or export my video file as an uncompressed movie in QT, resynch to my timeline and then export to compressor? Wow! That seems excessive. Yes, I trashed my prefs. The video and audio were in synch prior to exporting. I had to create a new sequence and move the clips on the timeline to where I thought was correct and then re-export. Check it and move it if it wasn’t right. Re-export. Huge time abuser.

If you export a QT from FCP and don’t check Recompress Frames (I think that’s it – I’m not in front of FCP) the export is not recompressed. I know in the past there were problems sometimes sending a seq to Compressor. I always export a ref movie for Compressor. Check the export before using Compressor. If that’s in sync and Compressor produces files out of sync try trashing Compressor’s prefs. If the exported QT is out of sync you could try trashing your renders and re-rendering. If you haven’t trashed prefs and repair permissions do that first. Also, run Disk Warrior.

Okay, it looks like even when I export it just using Quiktime movie that my clips are moving on the timeline. Im really confused by this. I was trying to export the movie just as a quiktime file, but it’s coming out of synch there as well. It’s perfectly fine when I watch it in FCP. I have checked the settings of the timeline for both the raw footage clips and the timeline sequence and that match. I’m not sure what to do now. Can’t really start over. I supposed I could with another sequence, but that will suck to start over. Any ideas?

Use Render Manager (Tools>Render Manager) to remove (delete) all your renders, then re-render. Hopefully, that will help.
