Apple Compressor 4: Can’t transcode AVC Coding to Pro Res
I was sent a file via Whats App which I’m using in my doc. It’s an mp4, AVC Coding, 640 x 352, variable frame rate (shot on a phone). I need to upscale it to 594 x 1080 and make the frame rate constant at 29.97. But it doesn’t work as is via Compressor. When I bring the file it in plays fine (which is of note). But when I try to export a Pro Res 422 (in any variation), the resulting video only plays 1 fps and with no audio. Both in QT Pro 7.7 and QT 10.4.
Funny thing is, the original video won’t play in QT Pro either. It only plays in QT 10. I tried exporting a .mov as a Pro Res 422 in QT Pro and even that file is unusable. What’s more, in both versions of QT it only plays at 1 FPS. MOS.
The only way I’ve been able to do this is by exporting a .mov file out of QT 10 but there’s no control over the quality of output. All I get is 480p. The exported file, however, reads in Compressor and I can do what I want with it. But how do I avoid this middle step of quality loss?
My specs: FCP 6.0.6, El Capitan, rMBP 15″ i7 2.6 GHz, 16 GB RAM

As far as I’m aware Final Cut and Compressor are incompatible with variable framerates.
Download Handbrake which will let you recompress the variable framerate video to an .mp4 of constant framerate at whatever quality you choose, which can than be used with Compressor or Final Cut.

live sometimes gotten weird frame rates after a transcode.
running the clips through Cinema Tools and conforming has fixed it for me.nick

Thanks for replying but creating an mp4 as a go-between only defeats the purpose.

Cinema Tools, I’ve never even opened that. And of course, now I can’t because I’m on El Capitan I presume! Just crashes. Thanks anyway.

well i think there are other apps to achieve the same end.
