Apple Color Training DVD is now available!
Posted by Walter Biscardi on October 24, 2007 at 8:03 pmJust in case some of you haven’t seen it yet, the COW has released “Stop Staring and Start Grading with Apple Color.” It’s hosted by an absolutely amazing fellow who has a real grasp on the Color interface. His name eludes me at this time, but go have a look at his handsome mug.
The way I look at it, Apple decided to give you this thing for free in Studio 2, so you’ll might as well see just how easy it is to use. Nothing scary in there, just a nice walk through the entire interface so you can see it really DOES make sense! 🙂

Let’s see… I didn’t host it. Who else could it be? 🙂
Just teasing Walter. But while I’m bugging you I’ve got a question about the DVD. Do you cover how to get the curves section in the primary room to be useful? Every time I play with it, the image starts to break up. It’s like way overly sensitive!
One more thing. Would you consider the DVD for beginner, intermediate or advanced users? (or some strange combination of the options)
Just one more one more thing. We should get someone who isn’t familiar with Color to write a review for the Cow. Just thinking about more ways to get the word out.

I’ve never seen the image break up here and I use the Primary Curves almost exclusively in all my grading in Color. I did an 8bit SD project and 4 DVCPro HD projects in there.
I show how to use the Color Wheels and the Curves in the Primary In Room.

One more thing. Would you consider the DVD for beginner, intermediate or advanced users? (or some strange combination of the options)”It’s for anyone who doesn’t understand how to use Color. The application is actually quite easy to use, it’s just that the interface is intimidating and it doesn’t operate like any other Apple app. So this DVD covers pretty much the entire interface because my feeling is once you understand how Color is laid out, actual Grading is fairly straightforward.
So it’s for just about everyone probably. If you’re an advanced editor in FCP, you probably want to take advantage of this application to really make your projects sing.
Heck you have a free $25,000 Color Grading tool handed to you. Why not use it?

I understand reviews are forthcoming. I’ve gotten some really nice comments in the Color Forum. Just wanted to make sure my FCP friends knew about the DVD release.
Oh and if you want to see a nice example of Color in action, go here:
https://www.biscardicreative.com/sampleworks.htmThen under Corporate click on “Apple Color Comparison.”
This is a piece I completed recently for a major event in Washington, DC. It’s all archival Beta, BetaSP, BetaSX, DigiBeta, DV and DigiBeta materials and it was all graded in Color. Some of the comparisons are pretty darn dramatic if I say so myself. 🙂

October 25, 2007 at 11:26 amthats an impressive demo of what you can do with Color, Walter.
One cheeky little thought that struck me was maybe they should change its name to Apple ScreenWipe – The contrast between before and after was like looking through a partially cleaned window….very dusty on one side and clean, bright and shiny on the other!

Well, of course, it’s not that quite that simple with Color. You actually have to work the controls to get the video to look like that. No “Clean Up Mud from screen” tool to select. 🙂
But once you figure out how to use Color, it’s an incredibly intuitive and easy application to use. And of course you can save all your “looks” for use later or on other systems.
What’s incredibly powerful about Color is the ability to bring up the saturation of one particular shade of any color on the screen. In the case of this video, I really pushed the blues and greens once I got them graded the way I wanted to. In many case, multiple instances of blue and green since I have 8 Secondaries available for each shot. So almost every shot has 2 Blue Sat Curves and 2 Green Sat curves applied in the secondaries on slightly different variations.
The “mud remove” is done primarily in the blacks and highlights, though more the blacks. Glad you liked that.

October 25, 2007 at 11:46 amI didn’t mean to imply it was easy, Walter! After all – even a window cleaner has to work pretty hard to get a good result! 😉
For me, where you got the most impressive results was on the dusty desert landscapes, where the distance haze was lifted almost as if you had a post-production polarizing filter. Really nicely done, and thanks for showing a before and after – its so rare to actually see how much work has been done to the rushes. All too often viewers think what they see is exactly what the cameraman supplied.
