Ok, so i used Fractal Noise to create a sort of mist for an apparition that t i’m crcreating in After Effects. My question is, how do i make the black part of the effect transparent so that when i bring in a video clip of the person to key out to become tehe apparition, i can overlay the effect and use multiply to make the mist a part of the person.

To key out the person i’m shooting him against a solid background and keying out the color. Once i do that i plan to lower the opacity of the clip to make him appear ghostlike.

I chose fractal noise because with some playing around i managed to create this cool looking mist twirly effect, i just have to get rid of that black background in order for you to see the person.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

There are many ways to make the black part of the fractal noise transparent, but I would say the easiest woul be to pre-comp it, and apply the “screen” transfer mode to the precomp.

I don’t believe you actually need to precomp it for that. You can just set the layers transfer mode to screen.

Your right Aharon….since Blending modes are the last thing applied when you render (masks, effects, transforms, blend modes) no precomp necessary.

Either use blend modes or get an unmultiplying plugin such as XMult, Knoll Unmult or Walker Effects Alpha tools. A cheap way would be to use a duplicate of the layer as a luma matte.

    Yes, they are all right.
And if after you apply the Screen mode there is still some black edge, you can apply Remove Color to eliminate it.

Use a copy of your keyed person (a precomp) as a matte for the Mist layer to constrain the mist to the Ghost’s body.

The screen blending mode worked great, as well as the color key to get rid of the excess black. I even discovered on another post where you teach how to make an “invisible man” that if you use displacement mapping i could adjust the mist over the “ghost” even more.

I really appreciate the advice guys!
