  • APP CS4 workflow: What Codec to export HD for archival and reuse to create HD movie / DVDs??

I just cant find proper answers in the net as to what is the popular and best / easiest way to export the edited HD video (1280×720 and perhaps 1980×1080) video to keep it for archival purpose,in case i want to use it in another project or export into a webformat or make a dvd in sd or hd out of it?

I can leave with the roughly 15 GB for 1 hour in the AVCHD format i need to save on my computer just to work with it,
if i can have a codec which uses not much more capacity than that, this would be great. Than i could delete the source files.

I read about Cineform HD but this is very expensive, id prefer to use a free codec (since APP cost already enough )
Also i read about DVCPRo HD and the free codec DNxHD. I am note sure whats best.

Most important is to keep the quality simliar as the original and a file size not to much bigger than the source,
also that it can be good reused in PP to use in a new project.

    thanks

We usually just save a project on 2 hard drives for back up as is, or if we have the original tape, as a trimmed project.

If you only want to keep what was edited, use the project manager and create that trimmed project, the remaining size is usually minimal.

Any compressed format will lead to some loss, and most will be larger than your original anyway.

These days you can buy 1 TB drives for $120.00, that’s quite a few projects.

Just buy bare drives and a dock like this one.

LTO tapes are also a good investment, but the deck is pricey.

    Hi vince,

Been thinking about getting a dock like this but a bit worried about long term safety of keeping bare drives without enclosures.

How do you store the bare drives when they are not in the dock?

thanks and sorry for the slight thread hijack 😉

Well, something like a plastic VHS tape cases will work just fine. You should also keep the original anti-static bags, but these can be purchased as well.

Wiebetech makes great cases for this, but they are pretty expensive for what they are.
