  • APP CS 5.5 locks up when importing AE comps & media offline

Posted by Chris St-amour on July 13, 2012 at 5:28 pm

    So here’s the deal:

Premiere was working just fine up until 1pm yesterday, and I’ve been using it for months without issue. I was doing some work in AE, saved, and then proceeded to open up Premiere so I could import the footage. That’s when I noticed that most of my media was offline(just about all of my audio was offline). Curious, I decided to restart premeire, but the problem persisted. I decided to re-link all of the audio, however I found that I was only able to link one piece of media at a time. Trying to link more than one piece of audio at a time would result in premiere pro locking up, effectively crashing.

I saw that all of my AE comps were either offline or ‘pending’ (sometimes it would be offline, sometimes it would be pending). When trying to re-link the comps, Premiere Pro would lock up. When trying to import AE comps, premiere pro locks up.

If I open a new project and import any ae comp, it locks up. I also tried creating a new project and then importing the old sequence/project to no avail.

I do not receive any error messages. Sometime it locks up as soon as I press ‘open’ in the import window. Sometimes it locks up as soon as the smaller ‘Import Files’ window pops up after selecting your piece of media. I am absolutely flabbergasted at the absurdity of this occurring so suddenly. I have tried multiple clean installs, have updated windows, have updated premiere pro and AE. I just have not been able to figure this one out. I have suspicions that something might have happened to the dynamiclinkmanager, but I just don’t know.

    I am running:
    Alienware M11XR2
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    64 bit
    8 GB ram

Any insight will be much appreciated

    Thanks Dennis,

Unfortunately the problem still persists. I managed to transfer all of my files and projects over to my backup laptop and was able to proceed with finishing the project. But I can’t be using my backup laptop to finish the rest of my projects in a timely manner, hopefully the root of the issue is uncovered in time.

My guess based on the information you provided is that perhaps a project got corrupted somehow. One tip or possible solution to try is to open a clean new project and then import a portion or the entire project into it.

Also, I’m assuming that you tried to manually relink the files and it didn’t take?

Yes, I did try to manually re-link everything, but it only resulted in locking up once it came time to re-linking AE comps. I was able to re-link everything else, but only one at a time (I couldn’t select everything and re-link it, even if it was all in the same folder. It would lock up).

I have attempted to open up a clean project, and then import part of the sequence, but that results in locking up. I also can not import AE comps without APP locking up, which is why I had initially suspected that something wonky must be going on with dynamiclinkmanager. Every project that involves AE comps seems to behave the same way

As for corrupted project, I don’t believe this is the case as I was able to transfer the project and all of its contents over to another laptop, and had no issues while working on it.

What exact versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects (i.e., have you installed the latest updates)?

Since you say that this is happening when you try to import/link After Effects compositions, my suspicion is that the TCP communication is blocked between the applications, which has been known to cause hangs and crashes. See this article for some context about that:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/startup-screen-hangs-premiere-after.html
That article was written about this problem manifesting at After Effects startup time, but what we’re likely talking about is a very closely related case.

Have you recently updated you firewall software or any other software that might block TCP communication? (I once hit this problem because FileMaker was blocking the TCP port that Premiere Pro was trying to use to communicate with After Effects.)

BTW, we’ve made TCP port assignment dynamic in later versions, so this kind of thing won’t happen nearly as often.

    Hi Todd,

Thank you very much for linking that article. I had actually come across a similar article in the days past regarding TCP issues, but I must have missed adding PProHeadless.exe. As soon as I added that process to my firewall, everything started to work once again.

Thanks for the help Todd, much appreciated. Dennis, thanks for your efforts as well.
