Anyway to Reduce an MPEG-2 File?

Hi there,

I have a project about 100mins long. Rendered to MPEG-2 with a view to author in DVD Architect but the file is 4.9GB and Architect won’t let me change the bit rate much.

Are there any changes I can make in Vegas before rendering to reduce the MPEG-2 file size without too much loss in quality?

Tried rendering to AVI and using “fit to disc” option in Architect but the final DVD quality is poor in NTSC, and in PAL there is noticeable flickering.

If my only option is AVI..

– Should I use good or best for rendering quality?
– Should field order be upper field first?
– Can I also ignore interleave (defaulted to 0.250)

Really appreciate any help you can give.

They way to get a smaller MPEG2 file is to use a lower bitrate. If you’re using the Movie Studio version, you can’t do this and you’re only option would be to go to DV-AVI to give to DVD Architect.

Usually “good” is fine. “Best” should be used if you’re resizing things.

DV is lower field first. So is the MPEG2 file used in DVD Architect.

Just use the DV-AVI or DVD Architect (MPEG2) presets and all should be fine.

Thanks Edward for the quick response.

I am using the Movie Studio version – never mind.

Any ideas why the PAL version is flickering (interlace flicker I assume)? Doing excatly the same as with the NTSC version – rendering to AVI then using Architect to compress and burn. Would choosing “best” for render quality in Vegas help this you think?

Read a few threads here and elsewhere that suggest Architect is no good for burning so I will try will Nero and report back. Also read that checking “reduce interlace flicker” in Architect (which I am doing) actually causes flickering so will try that also.

In this case it could help as you’re resizing.

I’ve not had any issues with DVD Architect burning my discs.
