Im about to plunge into an HDV workflow and Ive never worked with it. Anything I should know? Does FCP digitize HDV as DV footage and you edit in a DV timeline or is there an HDV setting for your timeline and capture? I dont have FCP5 so I cant check right now. Thks…

You are getting into something very sticky around here. HDV. HDV is totally fine IF you are working in HDV only AND you’d better have a G5 dual 2.7 Mac to do this. Yes, the firewire does work but there is way to view unless you have a Kona2 or Blackmagic HD card installed and there are bugs on Print to Video feature.

My best opinion is to digitize all your footage using SDI video. That means you’ll need an HDV firewire to SDI converter such as the Convergent Video one or the Miranda box. Both are kinda pricey but the output will be much more managable.

Thks for your replies. Im not really sure why they are shooting HDV, it is eventually being downconverted to a DV stream which we deliver to a station that reencodes to MPEG on the fly for broadcast, not sure what the point is of shooting HDV. So Im walking into this situation where they are using all HDV cameras and new FCP5 setups, and Im just wondering what kind of issues Im going to run into. Im curious about the bugs printing to video, the other day they couldnt get the deck to set a specific timecode to print to tape, so they had to eyeball it, this is not good as they want this material frame accurate, are these some of the bugs your talking about, I didnt get a chance to really dig in and see if it was a user error.
