April 30, 2005 at 6:13 amWhat are you guys talking about? I used Media 100 for seven years. Maybe I’m forgetting something. If you want the same simplicity on Final Cut – go ahead. Change your Easy Setup, highlight the clips, ctrl-click and select “batch recapture”. How is this so different or more complicated than Media 100?
If all you want is that kind of simplicity then go for it. Don’t even use Media Manager. But if you want, Media Manager is there as a very powerful tool. It has tons of uses that Media 100 can’t accomplish. Heck, you can’t even disconnect and re-link media with Media 100. Everytime I about Media 100, I realize what a joke it was and how much we wasted on them.

We’re talking about recapturing just the finished Sequence. Even if you highlight the clips in the Sequence, FCP will recapture all the raw media from those clips, not just what’s in the Sequence. Media 100 would only capture the exact media in the timeline.
Media 100 always had the best codec in the business so to call them a joke is a bit harsh. Their systems earned my salary for 6 years and without them, I never would have learned After Effects so well.

That’s not true…
You can create a duplicate of your sequence, make offline clips and capture these clips which have only media used in the sequence plus handles you specify. And you can retain your original sequence linked to the original full media. Its all explained on page 1452 of the user guide and I’ve had occasion to use this many times. Of course this procedure is only as accurate as the original capture was. People who name (or allow names to be) tape names like “001”, or do “Capture now” and don’t name clips before capture, resulting in scores of “Untitled, Unditled01” etc, would have some trouble making this work.

FCP always captures the entire raw media or it wants to capture clips that aren’t even in the Sequence. The only way I get it work remotely useful is to use the Copy method Media Manager.

April 30, 2005 at 6:32 pmI do 1 show a month 44 min (1hr) for one of those great cable networks, anyway i do it all on FCP4.5 and use MM to create a decompose and a new sequence to hi rez. so far I have done 7 shows and all seven have been awesome with the MM. I have video, jpegs, QT’s, speed changes, and a slew of other effects and media combinations and when I use the MM to online it works great. at first i had a few roubles and then i learned how to use it and presto magic it works everytime. to tell ya the truth i think it works better than the media tool in avid, and i had used an avid for many years.
