  • Anyone using the HVX200?

Posted by Spencer Davis on October 4, 2007 at 12:38 am

I was just wondering whats the best/highest quality way to import film off of the HVX200. Right now, I”m using 1394 to import it straight from the camera to the computer. The quality is still good, but I feel like it’s not the best I could get it. Maybe I’m not setting up the proper settings in the FCP timeline? Thanks for the help

Uhhh…where have you been? OF COURSE there are people using the HVX-200.

Here is a somewhat dated tutorial that I need to update for FCP 6…

basically, FCP will import at the same resolution you shot it at…so no loss of quality.

Here is an article I wrote on the topic:

And here is a P2 forum that you can search thru and read at your leisure.

thanks for that info… so the HVX200 doesn’t lose it’s quality by capturing through a 1394 wire? Would you recommend purchasing a laptop with a PCMIA slot to offload, or does the 1394 work just as well? Thanks

No…no quality loss. If you shoot on P2, then all the firewire cable does is act as a data transfer cable…copying the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP file onto a hard drive. You can do this by routing it thru a computer, or dump directly to a hard drive from the camera (instructions in the manual).

Or you can record to a hard drive attached to the camera…SPECIFIC hard drives….Firestore and Citidisk. Again…no loss in quality.

We have the HVX 200 for just about a year now, and it has been used a lot. Great camcorder, the best in it’s class until now, only the new Sony EX1 might be a a serious contender.

As others said, no degradation by just copying over FW, but you need to know that the native formats (native is a bit misleading, it’s not the codec, but the frame rate) don’t transport over FW. So, the PCMCIA adapter for a MacBook Pro might be something to consider.

    Regards,

    Uli

    Not true.

Native frame rates cannot get RECORDED over firewire, but ANYTHING you record to P2 can then be transfered to your computer later by firewire.

Yes, that’s true. Sorry, I was not precise enough. But copying via FW is relatively slow compared to connecting the P2 card to a direct slot.

How you connect the camera or P2 card to your computer has absolutely no effect on the quality of the picture. All you’re doing is copying a digital file & re-wrapping it from MXF to Quicktime. The actual data in the file remains the same regardless of what kind of wire it comes across on.
