Anyone using a LiteOn LVW-5005???
Posted by David Roth weiss on May 17, 2006 at 7:39 pmI’m considering purchasing a LiteOn LVW-5005, a very inexpensive standalone DVD recorder with a firewire input. I thought I remebered seeing a discussion about it here, but I’ve not been able to find it by searching. Does anyone have experience with this one???
TIA,

May 17, 2006 at 7:48 pmGenerally speaking, LiteOn stuff gets the job done for dirt cheap. I have a buddy with several LiteOn toys, I’ve asked him to respond, might take a day.

we have 3 lite ons i think its become the one off dvd burner of choice among editors
there is a firewire in, but its only good for dubbing from a camera
we feed it s video and analog sound. we tried feeding it via firewire and it was squirrely, but that was probably us as it was when we first got FCP
even then, to use firewire you have to have a DV timeline, and you have to come out firewire DV (that may be obvious)
it has been very reliable. the only caveat is the one we have cannot make a straight autoplay. the discs always have a menu even if there is only one clip, but that may be our model
its got a interface called “the guider” which makes it real simple to operate, so you can get yer moms to help you make discs, or your dog, or a monkey, or even a film student intern (HAHAHAHAH)
i beleive we had our best luck with verbatim -R and Ritek -R
hope this helps

May 17, 2006 at 10:32 pmI bought one at Costco a year or so ago and it’s worked perfectly ever since. It not the most beautiful picture you’ll ever see and the built-in menu is drab at best, but for client approval DVDs and quickie burns it has saved me hundreds of hours of unnecessary encoding.
The one I bought was less than $180 and I noticed the other day that were even cheaper now.
I’d buy another one in a heartbeat.

May 17, 2006 at 10:45 pmThe ability of some models to record directly to MPEG1 has been a great feature, too.

May 18, 2006 at 9:38 pmHello!
I’m Bogiesan’s friend.
Yes, I now have 2 LiteOns. The last one came from COSTCO for $120. I got the first one because it would record MPEG1 in real time. They call it VCD. It’s the only deck that I know that will do this. Real time MPEG1.
I have used both + and – R disks. I feel most confident with -Rs. I’m not so sure that the +Rs are widely accepted in other decks. I can’t imagine why not, but strange things happen.
One think I wish they’d change is what the screen, says when a user play a disk. I’d like to put in something special of my own. Maybe even actually use a keyboard connected to the deck. Now it gives you only the exact date and time of the recording which could be confusing to a customer.
Thumbs up for LiteOn.

Sorry if I’m telling you something that you know, but you can change the name of the screen. I know you can’t get rid of the date/time stamp, but you can change “Title 1” etc to a name of your choosing on each movie.

What about firewire? One of the other guys said burning via firewire didn’t work for him. I’m geting the machine for that alone. Does it work for you?
Thanx,

May 19, 2006 at 1:11 pmWell, now that I got off my butt and looked, I have the LiteOn LVC-9006. And, no. I have not actually tried to transfer via Firewire. Sorry. I just haven’t tried it.
The one I just bought at COSTCO is a mouthful. It’s a LVQ-5115GHC+.
I like the user interface of my LVC-9006 and didn’t know that I could fiddle with what the opening DVD screen said over and above the burn date and time. Thanks for that tip.
