Have you looked into SDLT. It is currently the only tape format that is being tailored specifically to the pro video market. It has a file system on the cartridge and is quite fast. Gigabit ethernet and built-in FTP. They will have 800gig cartridges out by NAB and they have a 30 year archival life. You can buy directly from Quantum as well.

January 29, 2007 at 10:03 pmWe use the Aluminum 4-bay (fanless) chassis under a RAID 5 with no worries. The enclosure gets warm – hot but Granite Digital says that is what provs the heat sink is working and that the temps are far below the operating threshold of the drive specs. With that said though, they’re designed for studios where fan noise is a problem.
We also employ their SATAVue

January 29, 2007 at 11:43 pmI’m using a HotPoint card here. It’s been fairly reliable, but if the Atto had been available back in October/November when I came back from location, I would have spent the extra. My experience is that the Hotpoint want’s to be unmounted & powered down before you shut down the mac, or it may remount with a drive missing.

I recently completed a test of the Quantum SDLT 600A drive a few months ago. After careful consideration of this drive’s effectiveness, I choose to return the demo unit to Quantum. Until the price drops significantly on this DLT drive, I will not become an owner. The DLT hardware met my expectations, however, the bundled software (including FTP server) was inadequate.
Based on your posted comments, I suspect this drive is likely out of your price range. It sells for more than $6000 USD. However, If you do decide to demo/purchase this system, Imagine Products (www.imagineproducts.com) is a reseller. Best of luck…
