I’m running the Graphire on all three FCP machines. I’ve been using a tablet for so long I actually have difficulties editing with a mouse anymore. As a metter of fact I take endless ribbing around here when I drag my tablet next door into one of the Avid rooms to edit. I have a USB extension cable for the tablet that I plug into the front of the PC allowing me to reach over to the desk with the tablet. So sad…

I would agree that a tablet is great for editing. It is far more intuitive and faster than a mouse. I wonder though if anyone can confirm a little buggy behavior with a tablet in FCP. Try shutting through some footage in the viewer (using JKL) and while shuttling, just move the cursor (with the pen) and see if you get a temporary choke. You’ll get stutters with a regular (non wacom) mouse, but the shuttle will continue as long as the mouse stops moving. With the wacom pen it will cause a much longer hang. I’ve spoken with Apple about this, and it seems like it could be a tablet driver thing since the apple mouse doesn’t behave that way. Graeme, Walter, are you seeing this behavior?

I recently upgraded to the intuos 3 9×12 from the intuos 2 9×12 which functions the same except for tablet buttons. The best thing for me is having a scroll wheel and multiple buttons in FCP.

The mapping I use is:

left main-regular click
right main-control click
left small-option click
right small-command click

Currently I haven’t mapped any functions to the tablet buttons, although I’m thinking of adding control, option, and command click there in addition to control and option on the pen.

As has been said, it really does speed up workflow and I hate having to go to our other station that just uses Apple’s single button mouse. Having a pen is indespensible when doing delicate work in Photoshop or doing any sort of drawing.

An added benefit is, on long days of editing, when the wrist gets a little tired, I can switch to the pen for a while to avoid any carpel tunnel issues.

Okay, you’ve forced me to pull out my Graphire 3 and give it another spin.

Except I find I have the same problem I’ve always had, when the pen gets near the edges of the active area of the display the cursor becomes very jittery, sometimes jumping to the edges of the screen.

I’ve also found that the tablet senses the pen much too soon for my tastes.

Is it just me or do others have these problems?
