anyone try the Mackie Control Universal?
Posted by Bob Zelin on June 4, 2005 at 7:12 pmHey –
I figure that anyone who is doing Kona 2 is building a blown out edit suite, so you would
be the first ones to try this new audio controller for FCP5 from Mackie. Anyone try this yet?Bob Zelin

Seriously though, a pretty slick little unit there that might be a future addition here.

June 4, 2005 at 9:58 pmHi Bob —
I bought one and hooked it up just last week. I’m using the MOTU Micro Lite midi interface between the Mackie and the computer. It talks to Soundtrack Pro and Logic flawlessly and I’m still working out which buttons on the MCU do what to the various pieces of software. It talks to FCP as well, but I’m a little disappointed in that implementation because I just assumed that the jog wheel/play/stop/reverse buttons would also work to essentially control the sequence, but alas it doesn’t. The Mackie simply controls the levels within the audio mix tool and that’s it. Hopefully, Mackie/Apple will come out with a more advanced driver for FCP with maybe even a special Lexan template to control/assign various parameters to FCP.
Cheers.

Bella USA Pro Keyboard is what you want. Full control of FCP with integrated jog / shuttle that controls both FCP and the external decks. Works extremely well.

June 5, 2005 at 12:22 amYeah, I know about the Bella. I’ve got a Shuttle Pro however which works well. I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone though…

June 5, 2005 at 9:27 amI am using the Mackie Control Universal, though I have not upgraded to FCP 5 yet. I plan to upgrade to the Final Cut Studio next month. It will be nice to be able to use the Mackie with the “Studio” apps just as I use it with MOTU Digital Performer 4.5, PEAK, Live & Reason.
Currently, I use the Contour Shuttle for Final Cut HD, Soundtrack, etc.. It is not as eligant, but it beats mousing and I can use it system wide!
The Mackie Control is reeeeeealy nice to edit, control, transport & shuttle with! It really is amaizing to see it “come to life” when I fire up a project in a supported application -decks, faders, software control, automation and all!!!
With Final Cut Studio, I look forward to same tactile operation, visual feedback and resonsive control I enjoy with MOTU DP 4.5, etc. It would make the keyboard and mouse less relevant!!!
I wonder if somebody (note to Mackie) will eventually create a lexan overlay for Final Cut Studio apps for the MCU?

June 5, 2005 at 12:27 pmThere is a link below “Re: KONA-2 TimeCode out?” where we talk briefly about the MCU. Seams like deadhead is able to get the jog/shuttle to work.
I plan on getting this unit when I upgrade to the Kona2…I would love to hear if anyone else is having issues. Most of the posts I read are favorable though. Maybe your Midi interface is no good???
I’m always interested in “real-world” user response before I purchase equipment…hopefully this is an isolated case. From the Mackie Presser:
Initial MCU implementation includes transport and jog/shuttle, cursor navigation, writing automation with touch -

Hee hee! Actually, my DM24 digital mixer has had it for a few years. I just need to get the optional FireWire card to have it talk to FCP and I’m golden. No time to try it yet though! Soon!
BTW, I’m in Washington D.C. on production. I had a layaway in Atlanta and screamed out, “WALLY!!!” but for some reason you didn’t hear me! What’s up with that?!!

Oh I heard you all right. I just looked the other way. 🙂
Next time get an overnight stopover and I’ll come get you.

June 6, 2005 at 1:59 pmWe are looking to adopt Final Cut Pro at our company… moving from Avid Media Composer and DPS Velocity. We’re 99% sure that we’re going to move to FCP and we’re down to ironing out the minutia in the design of our systems. I’ve been looking at the keyboards from Bella and the Shuttle Pro. Regarding the Bella keyboards, does the shuttle/jog controller have a “spring-loaded action”? For example, when you shuttle forward and then release the wheel, does it snap back to the “still” position? My understanding is that the Shuttle Pro has this feature, but I am unclear if the Bella keyboard does. Currently, the Shuttle Jog controller for my Velocity does not do this and it is infuritating! I’d like to just use the Bella keyboard in our setup, but may also need to add a the Shuttle Pro to achieve the desired Shuttle action. I’d love to hear about anyone’s experiences with either of these products.

Yep, it has the spring back feature. I prefer the Bella to the Contour because it’s all built in and is in a great position on the keyboard.
