(First, my apologies for a cross-post. I’m in a bit of a hurry for an answer so I have also posted this on the Sony Vegas site.)

A cameraman has delivered two tapes to me shot on a new Sony HVR-Z1U camera. I can capture the footage OK but whenever the video image has much motion there is also quite a bit of juddering/stuttering/whatever you want to call it. It looks like a framerate/pulldown issue.

I have Vegas 5 and I’m pretty sure there must be Properties settings that can properly handle this footage. In the setup menu on the camera, he selected a setting that was “60i film-like” or words much similar to those. The setting says that it delivers an image with “the atmosphere of 24p.” But it’s not true 24p, apparently. I’m hoping someone here can tell me how I can capture this footage and get it to play properly.

    TIA

Correction to my post, above: a typo. I have Vegas 4; not 5.

This could be one of two issues.

One, the tape was shot in the 24 frame mode. This mode is pretty bad and pans really don’t work.

Two, the studder you see is really not there. I have seen this before, but when I did a test render to say Windows Media 9, the results looked fine. I figured that my computer just couldn’t decode the pan fast enough since everything was moving.

There are many variables both in shooting and capture.

Was the footage HDV, DVCam or DV?

How did you capture – straight from the Z1?

Did you use Cineform software – and convert to an intermediate avi?

    Hi Peter:

    Thanks for taking the time.

Was the footage HDV, DVCam or DV?
    It is DV.

How did you capture – straight from the Z1?
No, I brought the tapes to the studio and capture from my Sony DSR-20 deck.

Did you use Cineform software – and convert to an intermediate avi?
I did not use Cineform. (When I start doing HD, I will.)

BTW, I checked to make sure the studdering was really there by creating a quick DVD, which is my final delivery medium on this project. It’s there.

By the way, one VERY important piece of information that I left out earlier: The project I am working on has Properties set to 24p because that’s how the rest of the footage was shot. Capturing this new footage into that project was just an experiment and I’m not surprised that it has problems. My hope now is to capture it in a different instance of Vegas (with what Properties?) and then export it as 24p 2-3-3-2 pulldown so that I can import it into the main project. That has worked for me in the past with non-24p footage being used in a 24p project. But so far I haven’t had success at capturing and viewing this material in an instance of Vegas.

Well there you have it. The 24P pull down is causing the problem. Find the camera and put a warning on it, Do not use the 24p mode.

Sorry I ment the 24cine mode. It is not progressive, It’s interlaced.

Yes, I’m afraid I’ve never dabbled with 24p or 24 anything – but it sounds a good idea to put this footage into a separate project then try different project settings to try and remove the problem.

I’ve found some similar problems with Vegas using 24p footage… Something you might try:

In the preferences dialogue box — uncheck the ‘remove pulldown for 24p footage’ box…

if the video is in DV format and looks normal during playback, then it’s actually 29.97 footage with a pulldown added (2:3 or 2:3:3:2). When Vegas tries to remove the pulldown you might get unexpected results.

    That *might* work… Good luck!
