  • Anyone know of an Archiving Bar Code Reader?

Posted by Milton Hockman on November 2, 2006 at 9:33 pm

I posted a message below asking about software to use to properly log and archive our tape library.

Well, my boss wants a system that utilizes a bar code scanner so that our tape library will work like a book library.

The scanner is used to check the tapes in and out so that we alwasy know who had the tape last. or who currently has it.

anyone know how i can find out the cost and info on a system like this? one that is just like a book library in yoru local town?

Those scanners actually scan a barcode into anything. I have scanned a barcode right into a text document, or excel. You can make up your simple database in Access or FileMaker Pro, and then simply use the scanner as a means of entry into the field you define as the barcode field.

Just thought I’d throw in my two cents…

Any archival system is only as good as the people who use it. We have the best of intentions, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve grabbed a tape ‘for a few shots’ and the next thing you know someone else is looking for the same tape – six months later. I sheepishly pull it from the bottom of a stack of tapes on my desk….

If you can, you might want to sit down for a brainstorming session with your boss and co-workers. If you get early and enthusiastic buy-in from your co-workers, whatever system you choose will work that much better.
