Have you thought about using a video camera. You get get good results if you have an LCD display.

Sorry, not completely sure what you mean. There are several good applications to record screens, like Snapz Pro. I am sure others would be excited to share their experience and give recommendations with others too. If you want to edit with it, you might want to transcode your video to a more FCP friendly format. Depending on your final destination, you might just consider DV-NTSC. Use Compressor to batch transcode your media…it will take some time, but it will probably be worth it if you are editing heavily. Good luck.

Derek,
You need to insure that you are selecting the appropriate codec that exactly matches your timeline. I use iShowu and I am able to use the QTs it generates on te timeline without rendering before a preview.
BTW, it sounds as if you are still using FCP version 5. Am I right? Are you aware that version 6 has been optimized for realtime playback of mixed media on the timeline? What required rendering just to preview in all previous versions of the software will now play as a preview in almost every case without rendering.

Those are two words for the same thing.
[derek nagle] “when i bring it into final cut, i have to render it “
Thats because your record setting do not match your timeline settings.
Check out ScreenFlow It lets you do your recording and then choose what setting you want to save the video as.

June 2, 2008 at 9:06 pmI’ll second (or third) Screenflow. I’ve played with the demo, but haven’t had a real need for the app yet. It is by far the best in class screen capture app on the Mac. Depending on what you’re doing, you may not even need to bring the capture into FCP as SF has some basic but capable editing tools.
