Anyone know how to create this?
Posted by Scyld on June 3, 2015 at 3:07 pmi’m trying to figure out how to get a very clean strong beam of light to re-color objects in its path, as it moves over. doesn’t have to be perfectly photo realistic, its more of a proof of concept thing. i’ve been playing around with booles but thats not working… does anyone have any suggestions to make this work?
many thanks in anticipation.

June 3, 2015 at 3:55 pmAre you sure it’s being done in C4D?
Perhaps the color is being done via Photoshop or Illustrator?

June 3, 2015 at 4:03 pmyes, i’m sure this is a photo of an actual art piece – with the color painted on. i’m trying to re-create this effect in C4D. any ideas?

June 3, 2015 at 9:24 pmI don’t think it’s possible to get that effect using light alone, but I was able to get sort of close by using a material with camera projection. I placed the camera in the same spot as the light, which I set to shadow only. I gave the camera mapped texture a circular radius by using a circular gradient in the alpha channel.

June 3, 2015 at 9:32 pmwithout your shadow light and adding shadows from the other light it’s basically a perfect match to the example – just depends if that example is the goal or if a light/beam that changes color should have a shadow

June 3, 2015 at 9:50 pmAh, good point. The shadow in the posted example certainly doesn’t make sense if it’s supposed to come from the orange light.

June 3, 2015 at 10:43 pmI guess what I’m saying is build your scene in C4D without the colored spill.
Export the still, Import to Illustrator (since the vector lines will look better than in Photoshop) and create the colored spill with vectors and masks, set the blend mode to taste.
