I just got a LOAD of aiff’s from the sound house. FCP says “File Unknown.” I can open them in QT, export an AIFF with the same settings, and THOSE work. But there’s tons of these files…..

Oh, and the stupid Quicktime 6.5.2 Reinstaller says “This software cannot be installed on this computer.” So I’m stuck with QT 7.0.1. ….

    lame pro app.

What is the audio rate of the AIFF’s from the sound house? 44.1k? Are the 48k 16 bit stereo?

What computer do you have. Funny that QT won’t re-install…

They’re 48K, 16 bit, stereo. When I export them from QT (or Compressor) I use the same: 48K 16bit. It’s like there’s a flag in the file that Final Cut isn’t seeing, like “hello, this is an aiff file.”

    Charlie

I’ve seen this where the audio files came from an OS 9 system and didn’t have the right extensions after being sent over the internet. Do the files say .aif at the end? If not, try adding it to the files to see if that will make them work.

So Charlie….. you made the move , Tiger, FCP 5 .. if you had it to do all over again…would you install now, or wait a bit. We’d all love to hear your stories from the trenches. BW

John is on to something here. I have received files that weren’t really aifs, they were some other type of files (such as a mov) and then the suffix was changed to aif. It sounds like your sound house might have done the same thing, exported them as whatever type of file, and then just changed the suffix to make them appear to be aifs. Hope this helps.

Try opening one in Peak, (copy of Peak LE came with your FCP software, I believe), or another sound editing app.
    Save as… 48k aiff.
This saved me when I had a similar problem last year.
