  • Anyone got Info about the 720p50 format specs?

I’ve been wondering a bit about the 50p version of the DVCPRO HD 720p codec. No info is available anywhere about the specs. All whitepapers mentions three DVCPRO HD codecs:
    720/60p
    1080/60i
    1080/50i

The thing is according to the HVX-200e specs, 720p at 50 fps uses 100 mbps. If the HVX-200e used the same 720p60 codec as the HVX-200, 50fps would only reach 83.3 mbps…

As a comparison the 1080/60i codec is 1280×1080 at 30p and has a bitrate of 100 mbps (6.7:1 compression)
In the 1080/50i codec, to keep the 100 mbps and the 6.7:1 compression at the lower framerate of 25p, Panasonic increased the horisontal resolution to 1440 pixels.

Now the 720/60p codec is 960×720 at 60p using the 100mbps bitrate

Then, what will the 720/50p format utilize?

    – will it have increased horizontal resolution to keep the the bitrate at 100 mbps?
    – Or is the compression lowered to around 5.58:1
    – Or is the bitrate lowered to 83.3 mbps (Practically using the 720p60 codec)

Does anyone have info about this? Jan?

I’m interested because if a new codec is utilized, I need an update to FCP before I can use 720p recording.

For now it seems the only “legit” delivery format for PAL is to deliver 720p 25/50 in a 1080i 50 stream.

That said, Norwegian cinema-commersials can be delivered in 720p25 and 1080p25, but then you deliver files, not tapes.

This is a very annoying issue!

It’s Panasonic who need to make the new format, not the EBU. DVCproHD is getting old and out of date anyway. The Varicam was never designed with PAL users in mind, hence low sales over there, it’s such a muck on to shot 25p or 50p and play with the frame rate converter to get out to, say PAL DigiBeta, or so I’m told.

There is a DVCProHD1080i50 codec though, that Apple promised to support, but I’ve not seen that appear.

Yes, the DVCPROHD 1080i50 codec is alive and well in FCP 5.
I’m currently renting out one of my FCP suites for a feature. It was shot in 1080P25 HDCAM, and is now being “offline” edited using the DVCPRO HD 1080i50 codec providing both very high resolution and a smooth response.

The EBU recommendations on terrestial HD broadcasts are:

    – Progressive scan is preferred.
    – 720p50 for now, but when available 1080p50 should be employed.
    – 1080i50 can be used, but the resolution gain is neglectable campared to 720p50.
    – For motion pictures and dramas, 1080p25 should be employed and be transmitted with a “filmmode” tag and as 1080p25psf not 1080i50.

The formats recommended are EBU S1-S4:

    S1: 1280×720 50P (Same as SMPTE 296M system 3)
    S2: 1920×1080 50I (Same as SMPTE 274 system 6)
    S3: 1920×1080 25P (Same as SMPTE 274 system 9)
    S4: 1920×1080 50P (Same as SMPTE 274 system 3)

So 720p50 is, like Greame states, already accounted for in the EBU reccomendations.

But back to the real subject of this thread, it would be nice with some info on Panasonics implementation of the 720p50 codec, which is not available in FCP, Avid, Vegas, Raylight et al.
