Question about RED footage. I have some dark footage that I pushing quite a bit to brighten it up. It is getting a bit noisy so I tried to turn the De-Noise setting to Maximum. I didn’t see any change to the image. I switched between the mild and maximum and don’t really see a difference. Has anyone got this to work with their RED footage? At this point I would love to add some noise/grain to some of the other shots (from Canon 5D) in the scene to make it more consistent. Any tips on how to handle this situation?

    thanks,
    Peter

It’s in the ‘Image Decoder Settings’ area of the RED Settings window.

I’ve used Neat Video too. It works so well I’ve wondered at times if there is some magic involved 🙂

At lower resolutions it can make the image look a little “plasticy” if you use it at full strength (with 16mm film at least), I normally back it off a bit and put some of the grain back in – just a touch. I can imagine with HD it would be flawless.

Neat video works so well it makes me wonder if it is the best thing on the market? It’s only 99 dollars and I have often wondered how it would stack up against far more expensive options.

Thanks for the suggestion. It doesn’t say it works on Avid or Resolve. Am I missing that? I only have access to the Resolve and Avid for these projects.

I take it that the De-noise in Resolve is not really working?

From my experience de-noise in regards to RED doesn’t work the same as a typical de-noise filter. If you fool around with the setting in REDCINE-X you’ll see what I mean.

Just wait till Resolve 8. It has a proper denoise node.
