  • Anyone ever seen this-Color Bars are all white

I posted a few weeks ago about this problem but it popped up again today.

So one of my editors had a system crash and then an hour later had an FCP crash. I trashed the FCP prefs, restarted the computer with a PRAM zap and when I open final cut again, I bring up color bars to test audio and video output.

The color bars, no matter which I choose, come up as an all white screen in the viewer. If I switch from RGB to RGB+Alpha, I get color bars with a red tint. If I choose show excess luma, The color bars are back and the luma a green check. But if it is simply on RGB, its a white screen.

When I pull it down into the timeline, I get all white as well, however the clip thumbnail is correct.

I have tried to trash the prefs again. I have rebooted the computer again. The last time this happened, I had to totally uninstall and reinstall FCP from scratch.

I am using FCP 7.0.1 on a Mac Pro 2,1. None of my other clients are having issues with their machines like this one.

    Any advice will be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Mike

How did the system crash? Sounds like you have a bad OS.

I was not in the room when it crashed but he told me is just totally locked up. This is actually the second time that I have installed the OS (the first was to correct multiple problems and I thought that I had).

I am installing from a drive which I made through Carbon Copy Cloner with 10.5.8 and FCP 7.0. I then do all the updates from the machine. This is the exact same drive I have used for the other machines (2 others).

On Monday, I plan on swapping the internal HD’s between this computer and another editor on the same project to see if the problem follows the computer (hardware problem) or sticks with the internal (OS Problem).

Did you ever solve this? (without the re-install)

We just had the same issue pop up after an XSAN upgrade. Strange.

I have seen (and fixed) this problem in both Final Cut Pro version 6 and version 7. One day the color bars are available in the generator pop-up, the next day, when I click on Bars and Tone (NTSC), they load into the viewer and all I get is a white screen in the viewer where the color bars should be.

The only way I found to solve this issue is to trash the preferences for Final Cut. I used the Preference Manager program (there are others out there too), and after trashing the prefs and restarting Final Cut, my bars were back!

I’m having the same issue, however, for some reason it only affects one user account. I signed in as a different user and the bars were there. I’m thinking about deleting that user account and creating a new one.
