Anybody using a Control Surface w/ Kona… warning
Posted by Mitch Ives on May 4, 2006 at 5:52 pmWe are using FCP and have a Kona LH. We’ve discovered that the Tascam FW-1082 control surface will not work if you have a Kona card.
Has anyone used the Mackie MCU successfully with a Kona?

May 4, 2006 at 6:29 pmCan you describe exactly what is going on?
I have the Tascam 1884 and with the quad I have had issues (even before I had the Kona 3 in there) It seems with other firewire devices
attached, it breaks the firewire bus sometimes.I used to use the 2.7 with Kona 2 and the tascam with no problems.
I have gotten the quad/kona 3 to work with it, but not as smoothly as the 2.7

The sliders all operate, but not smoothly. The play button is the only transport button that works, so we have to use the keyboard to stop playback. The Jog/Shuttle has a horrible delay… it advances one frame then nothing… and suddenly it jumps 20 frames or more. In general there seems to be a delay in communication.
If we put it on a machine without the Kona LH, all the transport buttons work… the jog shuttle is linear and highly accurate… no delays of any kind.

May 7, 2006 at 12:39 pmI’m successfully running the Mackie MCU. No issues at all with all latest Kona, FCP, and OS updates. Any questions, feel free to ask. I’ve been using the MCU since FCP started supporting control surfaces!
No issues with Sountrack Pro or Logic either.Ron

May 8, 2006 at 4:29 pmI’m using a 1082 with a Kona 2 without issues. So, I know it does work. All transport buttons work, and the shuttle button works.

Very curious… it definitely doesn’t like the Kona LH. Pull the Kona, remove all the software and the 1082 worked fine…

June 2, 2006 at 4:10 amI just installed the Kona LH and got it working with Final Cut Studio 5.0.4.
But now my Mackie Control Universal doesn’t seem to be recognized within Final Cut, though it still works fine with Soundtrack Pro. So it seems that the Kona card is conflicting with MCU.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting this?
Thanks,
Jim

June 2, 2006 at 2:10 pmU may need to trash preferences and reassign the MCU to FCP. Since you just installed Kona, its a good idea to do that anyway. I’m a big cheerleader for the MCU and have been running it trouble free with the LH for a while.
Also make sure your audio mixer is open. The MCU only runs when the mixer is open.

June 2, 2006 at 3:30 pmSigh … human error, I’m happy (and embarassed) to say. When I installed the card, FCP opened up in the standard window configuration and the Audio Mixer window wasn’t open. Once I opened it, the MCU was back in business. And yeah, it sure is great to let my fingers hover over the faders for the sound mix then having to slide my mouse over and grab the faders.
Thanks for your response.
