Anybody Switch from Vegas to Premier?
This has been on my mind for a couple years now since Sony sold Vegas to Magix. I’ve religiously upgraded Vegas over the years. Having hopes they’d fix some of the little interface bugs that have plagued it since I started with 10 Pro. I’ve got thousands invested in the software which has made me not want to move. However, I’ve tried contacting this new “Magix” with no help. They won’t tell me what hardware works best, or talk to me about their software anymore. Sony was pretty helpful which made me overlook some of these issues, but Magix hasn’t been there to help with any of the software glitches at all.
Anybody here make the jump from Vegas to Premier? I’ve got thousands invested this Vegas and plug-ins. However, I think I’m done with it. Does Premier crash all the time too? Or is that a Vegas thing? I built a system that’s not a slouch but Vegas still crashes quite consistently on me.
My system i7-5930 6 core 512gb m.2 main drive 1 TB SSD capture scratch, radeon rx480 w/ 8GB memory, 16TB RAID, 64GB RAM etc. etc. etc.
I’d upgrade the system more perhaps a second graphics card or a better processor (next one up is like $1000 for my architecture). But Magix won’t provide me any specs for what works or what doesn’t. I’m still unsure as to why the software crashes like it does. I think the timeline and other panes in the software are written in different threads / processes and which I switch between them it sometimes locks up, is my only guess.

If you work for yourself, I would stay. If you are having the same problem I’m having and not being considered for at least 75% of job listings because I don’t use premiere then I would begrudging start using it.

We use both. Pros and Cons to both. I’ll hang on to Vegas for a long time just because of it’s ease and ability to do closed captioning. I like Vegas much better for multicam. Premiere plays back better. Both have crashed but since version 13, Vegas seems to crash more. For some projects, I still use Vegas Pro11. It seemed rock solid. I have Vegas Pro 17 too, and most versions in between.

Thanks for the input. I think I’ve bought all the updates since 10 haha. Have never played with Premier though and always wonder if grass is greener on other side of the fence. I used Final Cut for a little while but am not a Mac person and have a client who uses Avid for audio production but their NLE is far beyond my budget ☹
Curious what hardware you guys are running? I almost need to do a full spec of my system so we can compare what works better. I was pressuring vegas developers for some time to give a best build spec sheet but never got anything from them.
